Dear Nancy;

I have a low seven-figure investment portfolio and am about to retire. Is it better for me to continue to own a ladder of individual bonds and some 15 to 20 dividend paying stocks, or to move to a pure ETF portfolio such as a ZMI or XTR with a small postion in something like a U.S. dividend ETF and an international dividend ETF in order to get income going forward and maintain my preferred balance of stocks and bonds, which is similar to that held by ZMI or XTR?

Although they would not admit it, most portfolio managers take a core/satellite approach when managing their equity portfolios. The part of the portfolio that might mirror the overall market could be considered the “core” and the part of the portfolio that deviates from the overall market can be considered the “satellite” portion. When you hear portfolio managers say they are trading around their “core” bank holdings – or they are currently overweight oil stocks and underweight technology stocks, or they have a small cap tilt to their portfolios – they are essentially taking the core/satellite approach.  But what about the average investor? Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) provide an easy way of implementing a core/satellite approach. We provide 10 reasons why this strategy can trump securities-only portfolio management strategies.

. Avoid buying right when the market opens – I’ve listed this rule first, because it’s a quick, easy fix. All you have to do is avoid initiating a new trade during the first half-hour the market is open— it’s that simple. The time between 9:30 and 10 a.m. is chaotic. It’s when the market is searching for direction and emotions are running wild. That’s why it’s important to sit back and watch to see what develops. This will set the tone for the rest of you trading moves throughout the day…

Are you suffering from IPO envy? Symptoms include sweaty palms, a racing heart and a gnawing feeling that everyone but you is cashing in on the latest get-rich-quick stock.

With initial public offerings such as LinkedIn, (LNKD-N72.830.821.14%) Zipcar (ZIP-Q20.010.663.41%) and Yandex (YNDX-Q31.82-0.97-2.95%) flying out of the gate on their first day of trading, it’s easy to feel like you’re being left behind. Buy high, sell low. It sounds so easy but it’s so tough to execute on a consistent basis. This article will highlight one trading strategy that’s been working like a charm over the past months.
